Transition

Love this transition stuff during recovery. The transition to the recovery mode was challenging but had to be done, no choice just too much pain. So, now things are coming around and after doing 3 painful swims during the past two weeks, a 1,000 that took two days to get over, a 500 that felt decent but started hurting at 480, then another 500 at minimal pain, today I actually did 1,000 with no pain. Funny thing how the mind works, during the latter part of it I was going through the transition to the bike in my mind. Transitioning is great for recovery!! It also has great application in the rest of our lives!!

Frog Watching

Hall of Fame college basketball coach Bobby Knight once said that he would rather watch two frogs making love than watch a National Basketball Association pro game. So, the other night I took his advice but rather than the frogs I did watch the NBA game between the Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat. Both teams are loaded with billionaire owners and millionaire players. While the only real interest in it was to see if the Mavericks could actually win a NBA Championship, the other curious aspect was whether these millionaire players were worth watching. The owners have spent so many millions to build these teams it is amazing that every ball doesn’t go through the nets without any effort. Turns out these guys sweat, miss shots, get fouled, foul, complain, and just look like normal human beings(except for the tatts). Bottom line, Dallas won and can win it all Sunday night since they hold the edger 3-2. Since there are no frogs on the other channels I may watch this game.

First Hit, Movie Review

In football you know when your injury is healed after you receive that first hit after returning to the field. In triathlon it is a little different since it is not supposed to be a contact sport. So, when returning to the pool the other day after16 days of recovery from the “crash” I discovered a couple of interesting observations. The broken rib is still a pain and made it hard to pull with the left arm, my strength and stamina was definitely affected, and since I am a barge in the water my speed for 1,000 was closer to Christmas. But the encouraging thing is I was there and will continue to be there until I am ready to be on the start line in W. country, the Midland Tri July 30. Goals are made to prod us into successes and achievements, it will be done. The transition from healthy to injured then back to healthy will be some kind of fun!!

Movie Review: “X-Men: First Class”, **, These type of movies are really well done but I just get bored with them. I do like the idea of possibly being a mutant some day, since they can do neat things. This is the story before mutants became main stream, so it involves some power struggles and disagreements along the way. But also shows some of their diverse powers and how cool it would be to be a mutant. Go see if you like sci-fi. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action and violence, some sexual content including brief partial nudity and language.

Medical Advice, Movie Review

Funny when you got something wrong with you everyone else has the same condition and then they tell you how to fix it. As I walked around the transition area of the Milkman Triathlon last weekend this happened to me. With my trusty swollen hip pouch(looking like the hunch back of Notre Dame, kinda) on the left hip, blue bruised quad, knee and foot it drew medical advice attention. It is amazing how many people had the same type of crash with the same type of results. So, I was advised the many ways to fix this from draining the fluid, to taking supplements, to massage, to vascular specialty treatment, to getting chants from the local witch doctor, and on and on. Maybe I will seek them all out since I am tired of this condition. Today is the two week anniversary and it is looking better....my goal to do my next triathlon July 30 is looking good!!

Movie Review: (Well life must go on, even though my butt goes to sleep when sitting too long), “The Hangover, Part II”, ****, After watching the original hangover and being amazed as to how entertaining it was I figured the sequel would bomb out. But, to my surprise it was just as entertaining. The way they do the movie is so orchestrated to perfection, it just keeps your attention to the details. While they used the same cast, Bradley Cooper is the anchor, and Zach Galifianakis offers the obscene flavor. The setting is the wedding for Stu(Ed Helms), the dentist of the group, in exotic Thailand. That is enough information, go see for yourself. While it is not an epic it has four stars for entertainment. Rated R for pervasive language, strong sexual content including graphic nudity, drug use and brief violent images.(What more could you ask for?)

Frequently Ask Questions(FAQ) After The Crash

The other day I got a note from a friend of mine asking how I was doing after the crash. My reply: Honestly it only hurts when i eat, sleep, stand, sit, slump, bathroom tricks, motorcycle tricks, bicycle tricks, sex(non at this time, so hurts more), see my blue balls in the mirror, shower, soak, drive, drink, swallow, itch, scratch, laugh, frown, barf, sneeze, spit, blow nose, clear throat, type, giggle, not get pissed off, get pissed off, see my friends, or even see my enemies. This is a great lesson in pain tolerance without pain pills, so I am really growing out of this adventure. The good news is that my friend was understanding and I feel better every day. My full recovery is getting closer!!

Pitty Party, Not, Movie Review

If you ride a bicycle long enough two things will happen, you crash for sure and then some time later you crash again. My eighth crash over a 28 year period was a little over a week ago and it turned out to be my worst. Aside from a slightly fractured pelvic, heavily bruised hip, huge bump on top of my head(with helmet), road rash, broken rib, stitches in cut on arm, bruising from hip to bottom of my left foot, everything is fine.

After a night in the hospital I was assured that I would be good as new in 8 weeks. Little did they know I have plans for 6 weeks so my body is working on it now. The following blogs will cover my experiences with this experience, and how it fits into the idea of transitioning life to accommodate current events. This is not going to be a pitty party but the realizations of the challenges that face us in life and what we can go about them. Let’s have some fun with this........I already have!!!!!!!

Movie Review: “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”, *, Good thing they had a hit in the first one, since they have really gone boring. Depp and Rush are good but wasted. Saw it in 3D and it didn’t help a bit, still boring and cost me more to see it. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action/adventure violence, some frightening images, sensuality and innuendo.
